Common Sense Analysis of Trump's Glyphosate Executive Order

Glyphosate, a not-so-good herbicide ingredient invented by Monsanto (now Bayer), and also a not-so-good herbicide ingredient that the MAHA movement rightfully despises.

In an ideal world we would be able to go full organic with our agriculture, but unfortunately with how baked into the agricultural system glyphosate has become over the decades, that’s easier said than done.

Due to the fact that most of the world’s glyphosate in made in China, as well as the related mineral Phosphorous being crucial for many technologies in our society such as batteries, chips, and superconductors, Trump signed an executive order to boost domestic supply of glyphosate and phosphorous.

A good portion of the internet naturally lost their shit.

”Trump gave Monsanto IMMUNITY!”
”Trump is waging CHEMICAL WARFARE on us!”
”I’m physically ill over this!”

Misunderstandings, overreactions, and lack of strategic thinking abound.

Let’s dissect these points:


1) Immunity

The immunity that glyphosate manufacturers would get only relates to the Defense Production Act - so for instance, contractual obligations they have with the government as the result of this E.O.

This E.O. does NOT give any immunity to pesticide manufacturers for current or future health claims regarding their products (like the loads of cancer related claims currently targeting Bayer).

Too many influencers are getting this 100% wrong.

2) Phosphorous

A good portion of this E.O. has to do with the crucial role of phosphorus in our country, especially as it relates to defense technologies.

As the E.O. states, “more than 6,000,000 kilograms of elemental phosphorus are imported from other countries annually”.

Seems like it’s a warranted critical mineral to make sure we have domestic production of.

3) An Immediate, Outright Ban Would Starve Us

RFK Jr. recently stated on Theo Von’s podcast that on outright ban on glyphosate would put 80% of farmers out of business.



We can’t let a governor like Gavin Newsom ban it or a country like China stop exports (who makes most of the global glyphosate supply) and screw over millions of farmers. We need to secure things the way they are now and have time for the organic suppliers to catch up.

Glyphosate is a necessary evil at the moment, unfortunately, as RFK Jr. explained.

We can use Sri Lanka as an example.

Sri Lanka tried banning all agrochemicals and going all organic at once in 2021.

It was a disaster.

Within 6 months their rice production dropped 20% and they had to spend $450 million importing food. They did not have the organic supply chains in place to make this experiment work.

Something similar would probably happen to us if we outright banned glyphosate immediately, or had a foreign government all of a sudden limit supply.

”If banning glyphosate would put 80% of farmer’s out of business, how did farmers grow crops before glyphosate?”, I was asked on an Instagram post about this.

Well, times are far different now. Farms used to be much smaller, more family and community oriented, thus more hands were able to tend to the field per square acre. With how centralized we have let farming become over the decades, as well as see it turn into more mono-crop agriculture, it’s a more difficult process to change the system that’s been created.

I am not, in any way, defending glyphosate, herbicides, or pesticides in this article. When I see a neighbor out spraying his weeds with a bucket of RoundUp, my stomach churns. I am simply noting how this Executive Order is playing the long game, the strategic game. I mean, it could be possible that Trump caught wind of some Deep State or foreign government plan to decimate our food supply by shutting off phosphorous/glyphosate imports or ban it, so Trump and his team felt like this E.O. was crucial for national security reasons, even though it’s going to “look bad” in the short term. We don’t exactly know the whys, but that does make sense.

And as RFK Jr. explained, his health agencies are working on solutions to get of off the need for agrochemicals, such as the weed killing attachable laser system he was discussing on Theo Von’s show that could be attached to tractors.

The thing is we need to support innovations to allow us to off-ramp from glyphosate, as well as work to grow our own food, support local farmers, and invest in permaculture and organic farming supply chains as a country.

This glyphosate executive order isn’t that bad, and at least amidst the over reaction of online influencers, it if forcing the discussion of agrochemicals and organic farming into the mainstream.

At the end of the day, if you grow your own food or get it from a local supplier that you directly know, you can be positive that the food wasn’t tainted with chemicals.

They can’t poison you if you don’t buy their products!
