6 Spiritual Awakening Stages You Need to Go Through to Get to Your True Self

6 Spiritual Awakening Stages You Need to Go Through to Get to Your True Self

By Janey Davies, B.A. (Hons)

Have you been wondering about life and your true purpose recently? Do you ask questions like “Who am I?” or “What am I here for?” Perhaps you’ve experienced a traumatic event that’s made you reevaluate your life? Maybe something just feels wrong, or you believe there’s more to life? These feelings suggest you’re experiencing the stages of a spiritual awakening.

There are six spiritual awakening stages, and in this article, I’ll explain each one and tell you how to recognize them.

What Is a Spiritual Awakening?

“We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.”

– Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

A spiritual awakening is a shift in one’s consciousness. Different religions and cultures have their own versions of spiritual awakenings. For example, Buddhists believe by completing the Four Noble Truths we reach the ultimate state of Nirvana. In Japan, the state of Satori represents spiritual enlightenment.

In psychology, Carl Jung said we are all born three times; once from our mother’s womb, second when our ego develops and third when our spiritual consciousness forms.

Jung described the formation of our spiritual consciousness as a spiritual awakening. It begins when we step back from ourselves and see the bigger picture. You begin to look at the world differently.

So, what are the spiritual awakening stages?
  • The Six Spiritual Awakening Stages
  • Are:The Wake-Up/Trigger
  • Bliss/Synchronicity
  • The Dark Night/The Purge
  • The Void
  • Grounded

Your Purpose

1. The Wake Up/Trigger

Signs of the Wake Up:You wonder about the meaning of life.
You feel something is changing inside you.

The first spiritual awakening stage is the wake-up call. It’s that nagging feeling there must be something more. It’s the moment you ask questions like,

“What’s my purpose?”

“Who am I?”

“What am I here for?”

“Is there anything more to life?”

Trauma, spiritual journeys, deaths, or illnesses can trigger this. It can also happen at a certain age when you ponder your mortality.

For example, actress and singer/songwriter Demi Lovato credits her spiritual awakening to a near fatal overdose in July 2018. In 2020, she told the New York Times:

“This last year provided me so much self-growth and was so beneficial to my spiritual evolution.” Demi Lovato

Actress Julia Roberts led a more spiritual life after filming Eat, Pray, Love in India, saying how Hinduism inspired her.

Whatever triggers your wake-up call, it signifies a new direction. You are awakening to exciting possibilities. The time is right for spiritual expansion. You view the world from a different perspective; one that not only looks outwards, but seeks answers from within.

At this point, you can either respond to the wake-up call or ignore it.

2. Bliss/Synchronicity

Signs of Bliss:
  • You’re aware of weird coincidences and patterns.
  • You feel at one with nature.
  • You’ve become more intuitive.

Those that acknowledge the trigger find themselves in the second spiritual awakening stage of bliss. You understand there is more to life than this 3D realm our human bodies inhabit. This brings comfort and peace.

Now, you connect to the universe, soaking up energy and expanding your mind. For the first time, you sense the world around you. You are at one with it, a part of it, and on a journey to self-discovery.

You know there’s more to life than the 9 to 5, and everything seems brighter, more evocative; waking you up imbued with passion.

You’re no longer alone because now you’re connected and part of the bigger picture, and it’s one that’s enduring and meaningful. You’re confident that with your guide you can find the way to spiritual enlightenment.

3. The Dark Night/The Purge

  • Signs of the Dark Night:You feel lost and alone.
  • You experience heightened senses.
  • You reevaluate your beliefs.

After the bliss stage comes the Dark Night, and this is the hardest of the spiritual awakening stages. Now your soul must cleanse and heal itself. During this stage, you’ll face your darkest fears. Some experts call it a spiritual detox.

“The dark night of the soul is essentially any time when our darkness comes to the forefront. It’s as if we are doing everything we can to stay afloat, and it seems as if the universe, the world, and life is against us.” Anna Yusim, M.D.

Here you face hidden traumas and emotions you’ve buried for lifetimes. It’s like falling into a dark pit of depression and not being able to find your way out.

Carl Jung talked about the Shadow Self; the parts of us that disgust, repel, desire or we repress are all hidden in the dark. Facing your shadow self takes courage and an open mind.

Whilst it’s true, you must hit rock bottom before you can ascend through the later stages of spiritual awakening, this dark time is essential.

Think of it like a purge of all the negative experiences and traumas in your life. You are ditching any excess baggage that’s been holding you back. Letting go of your old life to start afresh can present challenges, but it’s for the best.

4. The Void

Signs of the Void:You’re prone to viruses or illness.

Just imagine how you’d feel if you had detoxed all the nasty poisons from your body. You’d feel exhausted by the effort. And so it is with a spiritual detox. Now is the time to rest. Give yourself time to adjust to the new you.

In this stage, you may retreat into yourself and live a solitary, hermit-style existence. Where, at the beginning, you enjoyed a connection with the universe, now you sense a disconnection from the world. Sure, you’re cleansed from everything that’s been holding you back, but it’s left you empty and lost.

Now is the time to look after yourself. Navigating through the Dark Night is exhausting and will leave you depleted or even depressed. Rest yourself, eat healthily, and give yourself time to recharge your batteries.

5. Groundness

Signs of Groundness:You’re drawn to nature.
You have vivid dreams.
You become grateful for what you have.

The fifth spiritual awakening stage is grounding. Imagine you are a tree sapling, freshly sprouted, clean and unpolluted. Now you must ground yourself in the soil and allow your roots to stabilize your upward journey.

In this stage, you reaffirm everything you’ve learnt, through the trigger, bliss, dark night, and void. You are open to whatever the universe has in store for you. Bliss and enlightenment return. That connection you lost during the void is also back.

Just as lightning finds its way to the ground, you must also ground yourself, otherwise, it’s impossible for your spirit to grow. During this stage, you solidify the lessons learned and incorporate them into your daily life.

You understand that the journey you have been on allows you to connect your spirit to your earthly body. Now, your spirit and body are finally becoming one with each other.

Being grounded connects you to the universe, but also allows your spirit to continue its journey. Think of your spirit as a kite. If you don’t tether it to your hand, it would float away and get lost in the vastness of the universe.

6. Purpose

Signs of Purpose:
  • You have a newfound curiosity.
  • You’re more compassionate and empathic.
  • You feel at one with the universe.

The last of the spiritual awakening stages is Purpose. You have purged your spirit from all negativity and rested.

You now see the bigger picture. Your perception has shifted, and things are no longer black and white but many nuances of grey. There is empathy and compassion for others and a need to look beyond a forced narrative.

“You will begin to see through all the illusions in this world and strip off all the masks that you’ve been wearing solely for the validation of society.”

-The Spirit Nomad

You’re confident in yourself. Having set high standards for your behavior, you use your newly found confidence to communicate your insight to others.

During this last stage, you may find you lose certain people along the way. It’s become intolerable for you to put up with those with prejudices or hate-filled hearts. You accept these losses as part of your journey. However, you don’t judge people. You acknowledge their path is different from yours.

This final stage of spiritual awakening takes a long time to reach, and you may slip back to previous stages. This is because the ego is always fighting to regain control.

Final Thoughts

Completing the six spiritual awakening stages doesn’t mean you are at the end of your journey. On the contrary, it’s the beginning of an authentic life unfettered by old ideals. Each stage is one of reflection, discovery, and growth, designed to free you from the human bonds that hold us all back.

9 Spiritual Signs You Met Your Soulmate (and What You Should Do!)

9 Spiritual Signs You Met Your Soulmate (and What You Should Do!)

By Janey Davies, B.A. (Hons)

Posted on February 11, 2024

Are you wondering if you’ve met your soulmate? If you’re reading this article, I’m guessing you are. So, what’s been happening to make you wonder? Are you noticing weird coincidences? Is there someone you’re drawn to? In this article, I’ve compiled a list of 9 spiritual signs you met your soulmate. See how many you identify with!

9 spiritual signs you met your soulmate

1. There’s an instant bond

You know how you warm to some people and others drain you? People describe meeting their soulmate as finding the missing jigsaw piece. Conversation flows, there are never any awkward silences, and no topic is off limits. This person draws you to them.

2. It’s as if you’ve known them forever

There’s a sense of uncanny familiarity when you meet your soulmate. As well as an instant bond, it’s as if you’ve known this person all your life. This recognition appears when souls come together and resonate at the same frequency. You won’t know why you think this way, but on a spiritual level, your souls align completely.

3. They accept you for who you are

This person doesn’t put conditions on their love for you, they accept you for who you are. Rich or poor, sick or healthy, they can see beyond material things or changing situations. They see the pure soul, unencumbered by the body.

There’s nothing you could say or do that would repel your soulmate away. And because you are accepted, you can be your true self, weaknesses and all.

4. You learned a valuable lesson from them

Soulmates don’t need to be present for our entire current human life. Some come into our lives to teach us whatever we need to evolve and move on. Think about a time where a friend or partner helped you process a life event then left.

Some people describe finding their soulmate as exactly what they needed, but not what they wanted. Soulmates can turn your life upside down. They force you to grow.

5. You experience weird coincidences you can’t explain

One of the biggest spiritual signs you met your soulmate is curious coincidences. Perhaps you are reading the same book without knowing or have the same poster in your hallway. You may notice repeated numbers, or the same number holds great significance for you both.

Whatever the coincidence, logic cannot explain them. This is the universe sending you a message to pay attention to this person.

6. Your paths keep crossing

Do you keep seeing this person in the most random places or events? Soulmates must find each other, so the universe has a clever trick of pushing them together. It’s likely your shared interests will bring you together.

This suggests you are on the same path as your soulmate. So, if you frequently bump into this person, take this as a spiritual sign you met your soulmate.

7. You share the same beliefs

We gravitate to those who think like us, but with soulmates there’s a profound feeling of unity. As soulmates are two halves of the same whole, it makes sense that you’ll have the same values and beliefs.

Then again, if soulmates connect through past lives, they would have connected through their shared values.

8. Your soulmate encourages and supports you

When you find someone that supports your goals and encourages you to persevere, this could be a spiritual sign you met your soulmate.

Today, the focus is on us and selfish pursuits. It is rare for people to put others first and step back to let others succeed. However, when your partner or friend accepts you for who you are without judgement, it is easier for you to grow and accomplish your dreams.

9. They challenge you to be better

The last of my spiritual signs you met your soulmate is how they challenge you. Soulmates do not come into our lives just to support us, but to push us. They can be the motivation we need and often present themselves at a crucial time in our life.

Soulmates are often the catalyst for change. If you are unsure of which direction you should take, a soulmate can help you decide. Their presence can show you’re on the right track, or that they’re there to help you decide a different course.

What is a soulmate?

There are various theories about soulmates. Some think soulmates are two halves of the same being, whilst others suggest they connect through past lives or karmic debts.

Soulmates are not only romantic partners. Platonic soulmates possess a deep and meaningful connection. They are simply two souls that are connected in the spiritual realm. They reincarnate together, resonating at the same spiritual frequency, completing each other, but also teaching and learning from the other person.

When soulmates meet, there is often an instant sense of familiarity or a deep connection. They just ‘click’. Soulmates sense they’ve known this person all their life, and this is true, because, on a spiritual level, they’ve already met.

Soulmates allow a person to be themselves. This is so they can ascend towards a higher consciousness and complete their spiritual journey. A soulmate is in your life for support and balance, but they can also challenge and push you towards your higher self.

As such, soulmates materialize at important times in our lives. Their presence signifies momentous change. This change can trigger a change in attitude or belief or bring about a realization of our true selves.

What should you do if you recognize the spiritual signs you met your soulmate?

Remember, there are different soulmates who will present to you in distinct ways.
Soul friends

Soul friends are your best friends. Once in your life, they’ll be with you forever; they’ll never judge you, always support you and have your back.
Soul teachers

These are the people that come into our life to teach us, challenge us or impart their wisdom for us to grow. Once they’ve accomplished this, they’ll move on.
Soul companions

Soul companions are the romantic partners in our lives. Soul companions provide our most rewarding relationships and can last several lifetimes and beyond.

Work out which type of soulmate the signs are pointing towards. A soul friend can support you; a soul teacher is here to help you grow, and a soul companion can bring love and joy into your life.

Whatever type of soulmate you encounter, the experience will bring about a marked change that has the power to transform your life for the better.
Final thoughts

Soulmates can complete us, transform us, or support us. Knowing the spiritual signs you met your soulmate is the first step towards embracing this wonderful new stage in your spiritual journey.

5 Meaningful Things to Do on New Year’s Eve

5 Meaningful Things to Do on New Year’s Eve

Anna LeMind, B.A.

Posted on December 30, 2023

New Year’s Eve has a magic about it – it’s the time when every child and adult believes deep in their heart that the coming year will bring a positive change. I’ve got a few ideas on the things to do on New Year’s Eve for all those who want to celebrate this magic in a more meaningful way.

So let’s tune into the spiritual meaning of this time and program ourselves and our lives for improvement! Below are a few rituals to celebrate New Year’s Eve in a meaningful way.

5 Meaningful Things to Do on New Year’s Eve

1. Declutter your home

Decluttering your home is more than just a boring chore. It also has a number of unexpected mental health benefits, and studies confirm it. It gives you a sense of order, helping you organize your thoughts and, eventually, your life.

Hard to imagine a better time to declutter than right before the year ends!

Throw away all the stuff you don’t need. You can also add some spirituality to it by visualizing negative energy being removed from your home with every unnecessary item you get rid of.

This practice symbolizes letting go of redundant things in your life and starting a new chapter.

I also make sure I don’t have any pending housework left for the next year, like laundry or dirty dishes. It gives me a sense of closure and satisfaction, making me feel free to say goodbye to the ending year and welcome the new one with a clear mind (and home).

2. Open your gratitude jar or write a gratitude list

Gratitude is a universal practice that works wonders both for spiritual and non-spiritual people. It’s the simplest way to feel happy with what you have!

There is a beautiful technique called ‘gratitude jar’. To practice it, you should write down positive events whenever they happen and things you are grateful for on small pieces of paper and put those into a glass jar.

When the year ends, you should open the jar and read the notes. It’s obvious that recalling all the nice things that happened to you over the course of the year is going to make you feel happy and grateful.

If you don’t have a gratitude jar, you could start one in the coming year. Till then, another way to celebrate gratitude on New Year’s Eve is to make a list of all the things that make you feel happy and alive.

The purpose of this lovely ritual is to say thank you to the ending year, no matter how hard it was.

3. Write a letter to yourself

Another one of the meaningful things to do on New Year’s Eve is a letter to yourself. You could write about your goals for the next year as well as the lessons you learned in the current one.

You could think about the truths that opened your eyes and reflect on your personal evolution. Have you become a kinder, deeper, and more mindful version of yourself? Have you succeeded in combatting your fears and getting rid of limiting beliefs?

When the next New Year’s Eve comes, open your letter to see if you have achieved the things you had planned and whether the learned lessons have shaped you into a better human being. Reading a message from your older self can be truly eye-opening.

4. Make a list of meaningful New Year’s resolutions

Compiling a list of resolutions is one of the most popular things to do on New Year’s Eve. Every one of us has certain dreams, goals, and things we’d like to change or improve.

But except for listing obvious resolutions like ‘read more books’ or ‘work out every day’, try to think up a few truly meaningful ones. To do this, a great idea would be to meditate and engage in deep reflection.

Here are a few examples of questions you could ask yourself to come up with meaningful New Year’s resolutions:How could I bring more sense of purpose in my life?

What personal qualities would I like to improve?

Which of my character traits or thought patterns hold me back in life?

What activities could I introduce into my daily routine to be happier and more motivated?

5. Celebrate your achievements

Finally, another meaningful way to say goodbye to the ending year is to focus on your achievements. After all, it’s the perfect time for summing up the results of your work and personal progress.

Once again, you could focus on your personal growth and other areas of your life rather than just career progress. In other words, think about all the improvements in yourself and your life that you achieved during this year.

For example, a seemingly insignificant habit like making a regular phone call to your grandmother is still an achievement.

This simple New Year ritual will help you feel better about yourself and look at the bright side, which is much needed in the tough times we are living in.

These are just some ideas on the things to do on New Year’s Eve to celebrate it in a more meaningful way. What about you? Are you planning to do something special? Please share your suggestions with us!

Till then, may the coming year bring you love, happiness, health, and peace!

11 Warning Signs You’re Ignoring Your Intuition

11 Warning Signs You’re Ignoring Your Intuition

Anna LeMind, B.A.

Posted on July 8, 2023

In today’s over-connected world with its never-ending chatter, it can be difficult to hear the voice of your inner being. That’s why you should learn to recognize the signs you’re ignoring your intuition or, in other words, you are disconnected from yourself.

There are so many unhappy people around us. They just wake up one day and realize they picked the wrong career, married the wrong person, and wasted their life on nonsense.

How did they allow this to happen? They ignored their intuition and lived their lives according to someone else’ expectations.

If you don’t want to be one of those people, it’s better to learn to hear the voice of your intuition and be aware of the signs you are ignoring it.
11 Signs You’re Ignoring Your Intuition

1. You keep finding yourself in the same situations

When we are disconnected from ourselves and our intuition, we attract similar situations. We don’t learn our lesson, and thus life throws the same types of people and events at us so that we finally see the truth.

Are you always attracting narcissists and toxic people? Do all your relationships fail and end the same way? Do you feel unappreciated at work time after time?

If you get repeatedly stuck in the same negative patterns, it’s a powerful sign you are ignoring your intuition. Because its voice is always there, trying to warn you—you are just not listening to it.

2. You immediately brush off every negative gut reaction you get

When you get a negative gut feeling about a person or a situation, you are quick to brush it off as irrational and stupid. Sometimes you put real effort into convincing yourself that everything is all right.

I just met him. How could I possibly know he’s not a good person? I need to get to know him first.

It’s a typical situation. What could go wrong? I’m just being anxious.

Sounds familiar? These kinds of thoughts often pop up in your mind when you get a negative gut reaction that can’t be explained by logic.

It happens because you don’t trust your intuition. When you don’t have solid evidence that someone is a bad person or a situation is more dangerous than it seems, you just ignore your instinct.

3. You are indecisive

Since we disconnected you from your intuition, you find it hard to trust yourself. You are never sure about your decisions and prefer to get someone’s advice before acting. You also spend countless hours weighing up the options and overanalyzing everything.

This indecisiveness also makes you avoid the slightest risk. Most often, you don’t act at all and just prefer to leave things as they are. As a result, you sometimes feel like you are stuck in a rut.

All this stems from mistrust—toward yourself, your intuition, and life itself. You are so afraid to make the wrong choice and fail that you end up not making any.

4. You run away from negative emotions and pretend to be happy all the time

If I asked you whether you are happy, what would you say? Would it be a definite ‘yes’ or would you have to think it over? Maybe your positive answer would come along with a subtle hitch in your chest?

When you’re ignoring your intuition all the time, you end up lying to yourself. Lying that you are content with your life, that everything is fine, and that you are enjoying yourself.

Every time you feel sad or unfulfilled, you immediately skip these feelings and act like they don’t exist. After all, you have no actual reason to feel down, do you? So, you run away from every bit of negativity you might be experiencing.

5. Deep inside, you know something is not right with your life, but you keep running away from this feeling

And yet, there is a vague feeling deep inside you that haunts you. A feeling that something is not right, that you are walking the wrong path and living someone else’s life. This is one of the most warning signs you’re ignoring your intuition and have lost touch with your inner being.

But as you do with all negative feelings, you put it aside. You try to distract yourself and forget about it, pretending that everything is all right.

In reality, it’s the voice of your intuition screaming for attention. Because deep down, you already know that the life you are living is not what you wanted.

6. You feel tense and anxious for no reason

When you aren’t living in harmony with yourself, at some point, uncomfortable symptoms set in: unexplained anxiety, tension, and the overall feeling of being unsettled.

You are lying in your bed at night, all comfortable and having no reason to worry, and yet, your heart is racing and you can’t fall asleep.

Sometimes your intuition is trying to reach you through physical symptoms. And anxiety can be one of those.

7. You feel like you are not in charge of your life

Remember that vague feeling we talked about above? Sometimes it gets a little more specific, and you feel like your life doesn’t belong to you.

You are not in charge, and there is someone else who is pulling the strings. You are just going with the flow, having no power over what’s happening to you.

Maybe this feeling stems from the fact that you try to please everyone. Or that you neglect your own needs and always go with what others want.

Does this ring a bell? Feeling like you have no control over your own life is another key sign you’re ignoring your intuition.

8. You are afraid of staying alone with your thoughts

You don’t want to face these uncomfortable truths, so you are running away from yourself. To achieve this, you avoid every opportunity to spend time in your own company.

You know that as soon as you stay alone, frustrating thoughts start to fill your mind. And you don’t want to listen to these thoughts. You don’t want to listen to your intuition. That’s why you are constantly distracting yourself with noise and chatter.

You are always connected to social media or are surrounded by other people. You keep your TV on most of the time. It’s like you are allergic to silence—as soon as it gets too quiet, you feel the need to fill the room with some kind of noise.

The fear of staying alone with your thoughts is one of the most telling indicators you are disconnected from yourself and your intuition.

9. You are always busy

To get distracted from those uncomfortable thoughts, you don’t only avoid solitude, but also keep yourself busy all the time. You find it hard to relax and enjoy the moment.

You stay late at work and overload yourself with unnecessary household chores. Your social life is so busy that you barely ever spend an evening at home.

So, it’s no surprise that with this hectic lifestyle, you have no opportunities to sit down and reflect. By keeping yourself busy, you are running away from your intuition and the frustrating truths it’s trying to tell you.
10. You always end up doing what others want

Whether it comes to trivial choices or big decisions, you tend to go with what others want. You are afraid to let them down or just believe they know better.

Maybe you are so used to this passive role that you don’t even try to voice your opinion. Or, even worse, you don’t even try to figure out what it is that you want. You immediately agree with others and get convinced that it’s the best option.

Okay, this attitude is not a big deal in trivial situations. Does it matter if your friends choose the movie or your wife decides what color to paint the living room? But the problem is when other people also make more important decisions for you.

Did you pick your career based on your parents’ expectations? Did you marry out of the fear of staying single in your 30s?

If you don’t know what you want and always wait for other people to tell you what to do, it’s easy to end up deeply unhappy and stuck in a life meant for someone else.

11. Your mood is a mess

Along with anxiety, unstable moods are among the physical signs you’re ignoring your intuition. At one moment, you feel down and bored. A minute later, everything gets on your nerves, and you grumble quietly or vent out your anger at someone.

You also have a general lack of enthusiasm and energy. Everything feels pointless, as if you have no reason to wake up in the morning. This is what happens when you are disconnected from yourself. All these symptoms are the cost of ignoring your intuition and neglecting your real wants.

Do you recognize yourself in the above? Don’t worry, fortunately, there are ways to reconnect with your intuition. It’s never late to restore the connection with your inner being and discover the path to a fulfilling life!
